To mark Live Action’s 20th anniversary, Immersion X is launched as a bold experiment in public art and digital embodiment. This app-free outdoor exhibition features nine holographic performance pieces by internationally recognized artists, seamlessly integrated at select locations along Kungsportsavenyn in Gothenburg.
Through cutting-edge volumetric video and Augmented Reality (AR), Immersion X transforms the city into a canvas for layered reality – a spatial experience where physical presence and digital expression merge. Audiences encounter full-scale, six degrees of freedom (6DoF) 3D holograms that can be viewed from all angles, in real size, using only their smartphone or AI-driven, AR-enabled smart glasses.
This world-first initiative makes Gothenburg the first city to integrate human-centered holographic artworks directly into its urban environment. While grounded in leading-edge technology, the vision remains deeply human: to explore how performance and contemporary art, memory, and meaning can be reimagined in public space through a new digital layer.
Immersion X is curated by the curator-duo Jonas Stampe (Sweden) and Xiao Ge (China). It features commissioned work by the following performance artists:
Chuyia Chia (Malaysia/Sweden)
John Court (United Kingdom/Finland)
Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen (Denmark)
Benedikte Esperi (Sweden)
Stein Henningsen (Svalbard/Norway)
Helinä Hukkataival (Finland)
Olof Persson (Sweden)
Nigel Rolfe (Ireland)
Joakim Stampe (Sweden)
Positioned at the intersection of art, technology, and urban space, Immersion X is not just an exhibition – it is a prototype for cultural imagination in a time of layered reality.
As cities move toward hybrid digital futures, Immersion X is ahead of the development to offer a glimpse of what’s to come. By layering the digital onto the real, the project invites us to encounter contemporary performance art as lived presence – right in the heart of the city, with just a smartphone or AI-driven, AR-enabled smart glasses.
