Maria Q. BRISING

Maria Q. BRISING, Sweden

Maria Q. Brising is a visual artist based in Sweden with a Master of Fine Art from the University of Gothenburg. Maria works with drawing in the extended field, with graphite as her essential medium. The use of graphite is one of the first human imprints; the word derives from the Greek “Graphein” and means “to write, leave traces, communicate, and create meaning,” which forms the foundation of her artistic process. Initially, large-scale drawings dominated Brising’s work, addressing the battle between darkness and light. However, gradually she has developed a search for the embodiment of drawing. This has resulted in various graphite sculptures as well as performative actions that examine bodily and mental states. Using the body as a tool, the drawing process reveals an interaction between the mysterious world of the inner life and the physical external environment, evoking a presence in the moment. Maria Q Brising’s performative acts have been included in several exhibitions, in collaboration with artists or musicians, or in their own context, mostly outdoors in the woods. Often the pace of her body movement is very slow, not far from complete stillness, resembling a meditative state of mind. The artistic expression can be interpreted as primitive, yet with an enigmatic industrial aura. By setting the dark and metallic characteristics of graphite against fragile and mellow expressions, Maria Q Brising aims to nurture and care for darkness and existential matters.
